The first European title arrived on 1978 for the team of Canottieri Napoli. Into the final phase held in Palermo Italy Canottieri won against Partizan Belgrade 3-2, Wurzburg 5-2 and tied with CSK Moscow 5-5. Final ranking: 1. Canottieri, 2. CSK Moscow, 3. Partizan and 4.
