Tom Hoad, Australia: Mr. Water Polo

An eight time Olympian, Tom Hoad, represented Australian Water Polo at the Olympic Games four times: in Rome 1960, Tokyo, 1964, Mexico 1968 and Munich 1972, as well as being captain from 1964 to 1972. He was a University of Western Australia sports star in 1964. He coached the Australian National Men’s Water Polo team at Montreal 1976, Moscow 1980, Los Angeles 1984 and Seoul 1988 Olympic Games. In 1968, he was appointed to FINA and he was Chairman of the 1998 World Swimming Championships Committee for the Games which were held in Perth, Western Australia. Tom Hoad coached 'Fremantle Mariners' to three Australian National League titles out of an unprecedented nine consecutive grand final appearances. His record as both a player and coach, along with his respect in the International Water Polo community, is without peer. Tom Hoad has always strived to lift the standard of Water Polo in Australia. In his honour the "Tom Hoad cup" is organized annually in Perth, Western Australia, since 2003, exposing local players to elite levels of competition.
