In full view of Mount Monadnock, New Hampshire, USA, Dr. Dudley A. Sargent, Professor of Physical Training at Harvard, organized the first camp for girls in 1912, including Water polo; “Dr. Sargent starts a camp to make girls healthy.” (Extract of New York Times of Sunday 22nd September 1912).Dr. Dudley Allen Sargent was born in 1849, and died in 1924. He was a pioneer in physical education at Harvard University. At a time when the concept that physical education is beneficial to health and well being was being introduced, Sargent added scientific research to fitness instruction.
